Celebrating Success at the Sport Haslemere Awards
We're celebrating a memorable double success at the recent 2026 Sport Haslemere Awards, taking home the Sports Club of the Year title, while long-serving volunteer coach Ross Owen was named Sports Coach of the Year.
The awards recognise the achievements of sportspeople, coaches and volunteers across Haslemere and the surrounding villages, celebrating not only sporting excellence but also the dedication and community spirit that keep grassroots sport thriving.
Ross Owen: 17 years of coaching and inspiring the next generation
Like so many volunteer parents, Ross first became involved in coaching when his eldest son started playing cricket 17 years ago. Having completed his Level 2 coaching qualification, he has continued to give his time to the club ever since, despite a job that frequently takes him away from home.
Over the years, Ross has guided two groups of children from the age of eight through to 17, helping them progress from softball to hardball cricket and encouraging them to continue playing into adulthood. His ability to nurture players of different ages and abilities, while balancing competitive ambition with enjoyment and fair play, has made him a valued role model for young cricketers.
A longstanding club member and player, Ross also leads by example, supporting young captains, promoting the spirit of the game and ensuring everyone feels included.
Ross’s award is a fitting tribute to his commitment, not only as a coach but as a dedicated volunteer and clubman who has helped shape generations of Grayshott cricketers.
From one team to more than 500 members
We were delighted be named Sports Club of the Year, recognising the growth of our club, the dedication of our volunteers and our commitment to making cricket accessible to all.
As we celebrate our 130th anniversary, Grayshott has grown from a single team into a thriving club with more than 500 members and 26 teams, spanning men's, women's, girls' and boys' cricket. We also offer All Stars, Dynamos, Super 1s and, new for 2026, Walking Cricket, providing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the game.
Our growth has been supported by continued investment in our facilities at Grayshott and Broxhead, helping to ensure the club remains sustainable for future generations. Just as importantly, we work with local schools to introduce more children to cricket, with almost half of our junior members now attending state schools.
None of this would be possible without our fantastic volunteers. Around 100 people help run the club, including a coaching team approaching 70 parents and volunteers. This award is a tribute to every one of them and to the players, families and supporters who make Grayshott such a welcoming, inclusive and community-focused club.
We are incredibly proud of how far we have come in 130 years and grateful to everyone who continues to make our club what it is today.
