At last some decent cricket weather and the bat started to dominate over the ball across all teams. Alistair Wheble (66) and Matt Jackson (52 no), Toby Joyce (85) and Peter Messina (50 no).

Well done everyone. In the battle of the Grays at the weekend our 3s won by 8 wickets while our 1st and 2nd XI picked up winning draws, all against Grayswood. Our 2nd XI match report can be found below;

The returning skipper Joyce lost another toss which meant the Shotts were put into bat. A green rock hard track and short boundaries meant we were in for an interesting game with plenty of runs up for offer.

A confident start from Wheble (14) and Sriharan (33) set the tone with confident drives despite the variable bounce. Brayshaw (16) made it look easy from ball one and Hannam (13) dealing in 6s only departed quickly. A partnership of 128 between Joyce (85) and Waddell (42) proved to be the pivotal one with the ball disappearing to all different parts of the ground. The skipper found himself on his knees after taking one to the crown jewels and followed soon after. Waddell after a confident knock aimed to push the score on further and also lost his wicket. Mcbride (32) carried on the onslaught with Aggar (8) even managing to pummel one into the trees! The 2s ended on a commanding but chaseable 266 from their 45 overs.

After an energetic warmup the 2s entered the field knowing they needed to control and take wickets otherwise, Grayswood would easily chase down the total on a small ground.

The home side chose otherwise and in the 33rd over… Grayswood were 114-3 and the Shotts had fallen silent. It must be noted this was a planned silence… a 6 over silence creating an eerie atmosphere. This was the turning point as in the 39th over the team erupted with noise and wickets began to fall. Wheble picking up a quick double creating covid safe team bundles on the outfield and Danny Brown isolating down the road believing Grayshott were about to win….

Safe to say the excitement was minimal… Grayswood ending on 144-6 from their 45 overs.

Onto next week at our picturesque ground of Broxhead against Hindhead!
