3rd XI Openers John Wheeler and Peter Messina put on a 197 Run Opening partnership on Saturday in their home game at Broxhead against Milford 1st XI. Peter scored 125 with John Wheeler remaining unbeaten on 75.
Grayshott won the toss on a hot, sunny day and elected to bat on a hard, straw coloured strip. Opener Messina was quickly into his stride, leaving his partner Wheeler way behind as the total reached 50. A chance was flashed through the slips then gradually both players found their rhythm and the runs began to flow. Messina regularly cleared the boundary as the partnership passed 100 and 150. Everybody began to feel the heat but Peter Messina reached a classy 100 and Wheeler passed 50. The score reached 197 before Messina edged behind and departed for a fantastic 125. Wheeler was joined by Roberts and both continued to score freely, to allow a declaration on 222-1 from 38 overs with Wheeler unbeaten on 75.
42 overs were available for Milford to chase down the target or for Grayshott to take 10 wickets. Not content with his batting efforts, Messina took two early wickets as Milford were reduced to 8-4, with Aaron Avery continuing his fine form picking up the other two. Perhaps Grayshott started to dream of an early finish but they hadn’t reckoned on the dogged defiance of the Milford pair of Gregory & Crumbie. Chances were created but not converted and the pair remained unbeaten to the end (Crumbie 94*), deciding against an assault on the Grayshott total that might’ve driven a result, either way. Milford finished on 171-4, giving Grayshott the winning draw.
