Grayshott U13 Foxes 125-5 (20 ov)
Locks Heath U13 125-2 (15ov)
A happy return to matches for the U13, albeit with an understandably rusty performance from the boys. This season’s skipper, Cameron Ward, won the toss and chose to bat first, clearly salivating at the prospect of a short boundary and lightning fast outfield. After an inauspicious start, losing Jack day to the first ball of the season, Tom Wild (12) and Cam (19) set about rebuilding the innings and providing a platform for the middle order.
Tom Peterken (8), Jack Perei (25ret) and Cianan O’Keeffe (25 ret) ran well and added quick runs to give the innings impetus. We looked relatively well placed at 111-3 with six overs to go, but then became becalmed and added only 14 in the final overs (Jack Benson 3, Lucas Cottle 5* and Alex Pinhey – stepping up from the U11s – 3*).
125 looked 30 or 40 below par, and so it proved. Tom Peterken bowled with good pace and was unlucky to see a number of edges fly to the boundary. Jack Benson and Cam Ward bowled good spells but Locks Heath were always ahead of the run rate, finally romping home in the 15th over with two wickets down.
A few things to work on – crucial that the top order make the most of getting themselves in and get to 25 so we have wickets in hand for the final assault in the last 5 overs; and that the lower order take more risks in both shot-making and running when we have wickets in hand.
We put a couple of catches down, and on another day could have taken some early wickets which may have added pressure and changed the complexity of the match.
More than anything though, it was excellent to see the boys back out on the field, looking resplendent in their new kit. Upwards and onwards for the rest of the season.
