Grayshott U8's went to Barrow Hills school on Sunday to play Chiddingfold in their final league match of their miniature season. It was a bright, sunny and very warm day with shade being used cleverly around the ground by the spectators. Guest skipper for the day Ethan Daly won the first toss of his cricket career and elected to field first on the basis that the boys wanted to chase down a target.
Henry Jacques opened the bowling and got things off to a great start bowling a careful straight line and taking a wicket in the first over with a crazy run out. Ethan Daly, Morgan Rice and Matt Ince all bowled very economically too. Their lines and lengths have been much improved over the year with the batters only able to score 2 runs off their 3 overs. In total the first pair made 9 runs from our first 4 bowlers.
The second par were restricted to even fewer runs as Andrew Foster, Will Goodwin, Will Wright and Henry Kennedy all combined to only allow 7 runs taking 2 wickets in the process. Will Wright produced a stonkingly fast delivery to bowl the chiddingfold no.3 and Henry Kennedy combined with Matt Ince for a sharp run out.
Only 12 runs came from the next pair as Will Kennedy, Will McDonald, Andrew Foster and Morgan Rice all bowled beautifully to restrict any leg side shots. Runs only really coming from the odd no ball that just needed pitching up a bit further.
A supreme effort from Matt Ince, Henry Jacques, Will Goodwin and Henry Kennedy took three wickets against the next pair. Some development is needed on running between the wicket as again Grayshotts sharp fielding effected some more run outs.
The final pair set about the bowling with a bit more intent. Hitting some well deserved boundaries and getting the odd overthrow. However the combination or Ethan, Will, Will and Will made sure that 2 more wickets were taken and so not too many runs were added.
At the break we knew that we had to chase down 142 to win.
Our opening pair of Will Wright and Will Goodwin. played some fine off side shots and picked up 2 leg side boundries as they raised the total to 29 from their 4 overs. Good communication and good running between the wickets a particular feature.
Next in were Ethan and Matt. both were capable of powerful shots but often picked out a fielder. In their anxiousness to get runs both boys made a few tricky decisions on running and were run out twice. That said they still managed to score 15 valuable runs (including a monster 6 from Matt) and Grayshott had the lead already.
Morgan and Andrew played nicely throughout their 4 overs. Both boys have really got nice stances and look ready for action. For the most part keeping the ball off the stumps and showing some good calling between the wickets. With a bit more enterprise at times they might have bettered their total of 6 runs.
Henry Jacques and Henry Kennedy were a very switched on pair taking advantage of overthrows nicely and calling each other through sensibly. Henry Kennedy hit a lovely shot through the covers for his first ever 4 in cricket. With Henry Jacques climbing into a leg side ball and knocking that to the boundary as well. Their partnership grabbed 25 runs for no wicket.
The final Pair of William McDonald and William Kennedy strode confidently out to the crease and although they did face a series of no balls and wides they still hit the ball nicely whenever it was straight. Again the calling between the wickets was excellent and the aggression was there. 36 more runs to the total (13 off the bat)
Grayshott ended on 211 for 3 in their 20 over and finally after all the hard work of the year they were rewarded for their efforts and for their dedication. An excellent victory and hopefully the first of many to come for this...the youngest Grayshott team.
