A full team turnout on Monday evening to visit Elstead for the U13 Pelican’s game with our U13 and U12 players. Despite the wet outfield the pitch was good and we ignored almost constant drizzle in the first innings to complete a very enjoyable game.
Ted Hendersen rose to the challenge of captaincy and took the responsibility very seriously of course starting with winning the toss and electing to bat. Ted himself opened the batting with Will Adams and scored the second highest score for the Pelicans with 26 and 5 lovely boundaries. Leo Homewood batted solidly after he mastered a full “flighting” spin bowler but he and Toby White managed to confuse each other with their calling seeing the end of a short lived and frustrated Toby. We’ll work on this! Our last minute recruit for the game, Chris Clayden, made his mother proud with a fine and unbeaten retired 30. Patch Joynson made his debut for the team and Jamie Bell and Roxy Benson survived fantastically in the last 4 overs against 2 very fine and quick bowlers with some great running for singles and delivering us a well fought 105 for 7 after the 20 overs.
It was then the turn of the Elstead team made up of a range of age groups and one or two very fine batsman to complement their last 2 bowlers. Their first three batsman unfortunately were far too good for us and got nearly all the runs in about 11 overs with the first 2 retiring and the third caught nicely by Patch for his first wicket keeping catch off Will Adams. Then with only about 9 runs needed, some very tight bowling and some great team spirit and attention to the field it took Elstead another 4-5 overs to eventually make the runs for their win.
We managed to try 8 of our bowlers and I need to mention a fine performance from Conner Knight with only 7 runs off his 2 overs and Eddie Collins who took on their 2 opening batsman. Will Adams will remember his last over , a wicket maiden.
A good team performance in the drizzle. Roll on the next challenge!
