Wednesday evening's game was a trip to the seaside on a lovely clear evening started with a few boys down at the beach practicing their bowling and throwing skills by skimming stones trying to beat grandpa Juneja’s legendary 7 stone skimmer. Louis came close with 5 so the record is still intact, followed by a bit if fossil hunting and we had now had our warm up !
Portsmouth won the toss and elected to bowl first. James SP (11) and Charlie P (2) made a steady start without losing a wicket. James hit a beautiful cover shot for an early four but chances were limited. Charlie was making his debut for the midweek team looked very confident and making some good loud calls and solid running between the wickets. Well done Charlie.
Arun (16) and Thomas were up next up. We know Arun loves to turn the ball round to fine leg for four and he did not disappoint showing he is perfecting this shot and hit 3 fours in total. After the pair the team had lost 1 wicket and were up to 59 runs.
Louis (21) and Alfie (10) ended making an additional 39 runs with no further loss of wickets. Louis continued his recent good form of hitting 3 fours and was close on a couple occasions for a six especially when one went sailing over the head of the bowler but dropped short of the boundary and Alfie hitting a four himself. The team were up to 98 for 1 wicket.
Tommy (39) and James W(11) took the score on for the team with Tommy hitting 7 fours in his innings, the fielder at square leg was having to spend a good amount of time running to fetch the ball from over the boundary. James W was eager running between the wickets and had limited time facing the bowler but managed to get a reasonable score. The team ended batting innings with 170 for 1 wicket.
The team took 7 wickets and restricted Portsmouth to 93 runs. Charlie took a wicket and Alfie got a couple of wickets which was great to see that their practising is paying off. Tommy managed a maiden over . Special mention to James W who took 3 wickets for 11 runs and James SP showing some recent consistency with 1 wicket for only 4 runs.
The result ended :
A few things to work on - When Batting, to be positive when running between the wickets. When fielding thinking about when to just hold onto the ball and being calm therefore restricting the batting teams runs, or choosing to flick or underarm the ball when close in around the wicket rather than the missile overarm throw. A great win, well done team.
