The morning started looking out the window to check on the weather, it was not looking good until about 7:30 when the sky cleared and it was game on.
The team were in good spirits with this being the last game of the season. The crowd were not sure to keep jumpers on or take them off as the sun shone and the dipped behind a cloud all morning.
Portsmouth won the toss decided to bat first.
Charlie P got the first over of the match off to a cracking start with 2 wickets for 5 runs. The bowling from Grayshott was pretty tight with only 11 wides/no balls bowled. One of the highlights of the over was Louis taking probably catch of the season at wicket keeper as Tommy delivered a rocket of a ball just wide of the off stump, this took a nick from the batsmen top edge, there was need for super quick reflexes and a right hand stuck out and a one handed catch was taken as it nestled into the glove. Great catch Louis.
James S P whose bowling has improved throughout the season got the ball stuck at the bottom of the wickets to take another wicket as he purred by me like a Rolls Royce.
Throughout the season our bowling has generally been the difference between winning and losing, this time we had almost as many runs as the opposition after we had taken 12 wickets (gaining 60 runs) whilst Portsmouth had amassed 71 runs in the opening innings.
The pressure was off as the team went into bat, however, the team played to get as many runs on the board as possible.
William J(12) and Charlie P (5) got the team off to a steady start with some comfortable batting. Louis (15) and Angus (14) moved the score on, there was some aggressive risky running by the two. Finlay(12) and James W(21) played really well as a pair with clear communication and confident running. James W was enjoying perfecting his pull shot with four 4's during his innings.
Tommy(23) and James SP(11) batted with freedom with the pair of them hitting some lovely drives past the bowler for fours. Tommy always gets the highest score in each game and today was no different with him hitting five 4's.
The season is over and the team have worked hard and played hard this season. We await final confirmation of whether the team have topped the table as we are equal points with Locks Heath whom we narrowly beat by 4 runs and this could be all that separates the two teams over the season.
Each player has contributed to the season in their own way and we are starting to see the strengths of each player starting to emerge and so we look forward to an exciting season next year, it has been a pleasure to see your young players develop.
Thank you to the parents for making the players available for the games and providing refreshments as and when needed as well as scoring and warming the batsmen up, it really has been a team effort all round which really helps us as coaches out.
Have a great summer and we will see you at the awards ceremony which is on the evening of Friday 14th September at Broxhead Pavilion, 7.30pm start.
