Grayshott U9 Pelicans 264 for 1 beat Headley 164 for 6
Although an under 9 game, the Pelicans fielded a team largely made up with U8s, U7s and even an under 5!! This did not stop the team with 5 debutants (including the youngest ever player to represent Grayshott CC - Henry Kennedy at 5 years old!) putting in an excellent performance across all disciplines.
Grayshott won the toss and Skipper for the evening Jack Henderson choose to field first. The opening pairs of Grayshott bowlers bowling with great control and kept the extras down to a low level for this age group with the fielders backing the bowlers up superbly. A special mention is needed for 4 year-old debutant Henry K bowling his two overs and giving away only 3 extras. The wickets however didn't arrive until Finley and William Kennedy bowled their two over spells with their pace and direction shocking the Headley batters into submission. We then saw two superb catches with Billy Macdonald taking a fine caught and bowled to mark his debut and Maggie taking a catch behind the stumps when wicket keeping. This bowling and fielding display kept the Headley team to a modest 164 and is a great credit to all the Grayshott players who concentrated throughout the innings and made sure the bowlers were well supported in the field and vocally too.
William J and Finley opened the Grayshott innings and created a great platform for the team and set the tone for the rest of the innings, scoring 40 runs off their 4 overs including a selection of well hit fours from both players. This was continued by the two Jacks - Henderson and Wright who kept up the pace scoring 33 off their 4 overs with Jack W hitting some fine pull shots and Jack H hiting some lovely cover drives. Angus and Fergus managed to increase the run rate even further and punished the Headley misfields with excellent calling between the wickets and making sure the second run was always on. Maggie and Billly then kept up the pace, although a mix-up saw the only wicket fall for Grayshott with a run-out. Billy added to his C&B with a nice four. William and Henry Kennedy saw the innings home making sure no more wickets fell and the singles were run well.
The fact that there was 5 players making their debut and it was a great performance from all the players is a credit to the hard work from the players this summer. All the players showed good skills in their batting, bowling and fielding always playing with a smile and supporting each other.
