Grayshott U9 Lions turned up bright and early on a glorious Sunday morning to play Brook at Amesbury. This being a Lions game saw a mix of U8 and U9 age group players.

Scott Watson was nominated captain for the day and got the day off to a good start by winning the toss and electing to bowl first. Scott and Lucas were the first pair to bowl, they both started exceptionally well with no wides or no balls, Scott bowling 2 overs for 13 runs with 1 wicket, Lucas bowling 2 overs for -4 runs with two wickets. The opposition only having 109 runs on the board after 4 overs. Bella and Harrison bowled next, Bella and Harrison both picking up wickets in their first overs, they bowled with good consistency and accuracy only a couple of wides coming off their next overs. This batting pair for Brook had scored another 16 runs taking their total up to 125. William and Toby bowled next again bowling decent lines and lengths, Toby taking an impressive caught and bowled. Brook now on 138 runs after 12 overs. Xavier and Louis making up the next bowling combination. Xavier’s first over going for only 3 runs, Louis bowled a good and reliable first over. Xavier’s next over undoubtedly moment of the match. A Hat-trick which included two catches from Bella and Lucas and an excellent delivery to bowl the Brook Batsmen. He also managed to use the extra incentive from Rav, who promised him a Chocolate bar after the second wicket if he was to get a hat-trick. Louis also picking up a wicket in his final over, meaning that this bowling combination had reduced Brooks score by 4 runs. Resulting in them being on 134 after 16 overs. James and Gus were the final pair to bowl. Gus and James faced some good batsmen who put on 37 runs taking Brooks final score to 171 off 20.

After drinks and excellent snacks were provided by Mrs Le Mere and Mark would argue himself….. Grayshott went out to bat. Scott and Lucas pairing up again to open the batting, They batted well, hitting the bad balls for 4 and running strongly in between the wickets, bringing the total up to 125 after their 4 overs, only losing one wicket. Harrison and Bella came in to bat next they ran some good singles managing not to lose a single wicket. They added an extra 18 taking the score up to 143. Toby and Xavier were the next pairing to bat, adding another 16 runs in their 4 overs making the score 159. William and Louis came into bat, who faced their best bowlers resulting in only 13 runs coming off their 4 overs making the score 172. Grayshott now needing to not lose any more wickets to win the game. Gus and James the last pair to bat did exactly what was needed, ran sensibly between the wickets picking up the odd single in each over. They added a further 16 runs, meaning Grayshott ended on 188 off 20 overs.

A great effort from everyone, the bowling much improved from last week, as well as the attention paid in the field. It proved the point that the team that fields best wins’ games.

Let’s continue these types of performances in games. Overall calling could have been better but this will improve with match practice and more work in training.

A big thank you to Ally and Duncan for Scoring, Godfrey for helping with the warm up, Mark and his wife for doing the interval snacks and field placing.

P.S Xavier your chocolate bar will be there at training on Saturday.
