Well – we were down the M3 and on to Bagshot Park again for the second time this year. This time for the big show down against Bagshot.
Overcast conditions greeted us and the squad duly arrived at 1pm as requested for the 2pm start. The boys who seemed to be pumped up by the occasion were put through vigorous and valuable warm up drills by Rob, Cam and Rav. Will lost the toss and was asked to bowl first.
Kieran (4-0-21-3) and Alex (4-0-23-4) shared the new ball and bowled with lot of pace and aggression in their initial spells. Alexander kept the board ticking for but succumbed to Kieran in the third over. Alex’s second over was a cracker as he removed the danger men in Chris Searle and R Blake and sending the home team from a decent start to 33 for 3 off 4 overs. Runs kept coming for Bagshot aided by the small boundaries and at the half way stage they were 67 for 4.
Toby, Harrison (4-0-16-2), Will, Harry and George continued the good work with the ball and was well supported with some excellent fielding. A fruitful partnership of 51 for the 5th
wicket between A Goss (26) and W Griffin (27) ensued until Harrison removed Goss in the 15th
over with the score at 92 for 5. Grayshott tightened the screw and conceded just 16 runs in the last 5 overs finishing at 108 for 9. A superb effort as at one time we staring down at a possible 130/140. A notable piece of fielding by Harrison as he dived to his right to cut off a certain boundary and then having a direct hit while still on the floor to run out Griffin.
The Grayshott openers Rohan and Jac (32) got us off to a flyer reaching 35 in the fifth over before Rohan fell. Jac was joined by Harrison (31) who plundered three massive big ones on to the adjoining pub car park and streets. The demise of Harrison and Jac brought Will and Ben (18 no) together and while Will batted cautiously to hold his end up Ben unleashed a barrage of boundaries and reached his 18 in just 7 balls and eventually to victory in 12 overs.
In the absence of any league officials the Bagshot CC Chairman presented the medals and the trophy.
So a fabulous victory and very worthy winners of the 2016 WSYCL U17 league yet again. Bagshot were a good side and our convincing win showed how well we performed as a unit. The early arrival and getting ourselves in the proper frame of mind and being focused ensured our success. I am sure Mark would have been proud of you guys as much as I was. Makes all that effort over the summer every bit worthwhile. Thank you guys and it has been a pleasure being involved. Good luck for your new academic year in schools and colleges.
There was a Bagshot parent who asked me where Grayshott was. I am sure he hurried home to refer to Google maps. It is high time that the cricketing fraternity know who we are and where we are!!
